Reading Recommendations
This summer I have a few recommendations so far. First, I would suggest reading "The One and Only Ivan" by K. A. Applegate. Animal lovers will be drawn to the unique and lovable personalities of Ivan, Bob and Stella. It is written as a first person account of Ivan as he depicts what life is like for him, a silverback gorilla who lives in the circus at the mall. It is ideal for students in Grades 3 or 4.
My next suggestion is reading "Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library". All I can say is, I would love to have Mr. Lemoncello's library come to life! There are holographic images of famous authors and unique games and activities to name but a few. The story is about a group of twelve year olds are selected to spend the night in the new library before it opens to the public and the mystery and excitement that unfolds as they try to escape. It's a great way to begin learning about literature! For Grades 3-6!
For older students I would recommend "The Giver Quartet" by Lois Lowry. Starting in "The Giver" readers are introduced to Jonas and his community. Everything is predetermined from food, clothing and occupations. Through the remaining books readers begin to question societial organization as they meet Kira, Christopher, Matty and Claire and observe their life events.
